 Blood pressure checks and ABPM monitoring

1 in 3 adults in the UK have high blood pressure and is the third biggest risk factor for all disease after smoking and diet according to Blood Pressure UK.

Pharmacies across the UK can offer funded blood pressure checks and hypertension case-finding services through the local NHS Community Blood Pressure Check Service or Pharmacy First, depending on what part of the UK you are in. These services are an important part of delivering crucial community healthcare services and can have a profound impact on local health within your area.

Whether or not you are registered for delivering Pharmacy First Services, or similar, you can still provide important guidance, clinics for ABPM monitoring or provide a retail opportunity for selling blood pressure monitors to your customers.

The good news is that we have scoured the market to find you the best blood pressure monitors and ABPM's out on the market....

 Blood pressure checks and pharmacy funding

The funding and application of blood pressure check services in community pharmacies are not identical across England, Scotland, Wales Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. We have gathered some useful links to help you find the resources that will help you deliver these services and understand the funding available for blood pressure checks and abpm monitoring.

  • Hypertension Case-Finding Advanced Service, first launched in England in October 2021 and is optional for community pharmacies
  • The NHS Community Pharmacy Blood Pressure Check Service supports risk identification and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
  • These services aren't as specific in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland, many of services are rolled into the overall funding.
  • What the service will provide
  • A community pharmacist will opportunistically measure the blood pressure of consenting adults who come into the pharmacy, by offering anyone a free blood pressure check who:
    • is over the age of 40;
    • has not previously been identified as having hypertension or a related condition; and
    • has not had their blood pressure measured by a health professional within the previous six months.

Pharmacy contracts and funding structures are unique to each country, please refer to local resources for more information.
